I did paper sorting all day. Jane kept bringing me more bags and boxes of paper. This client didn’t do file cabinets; she just kept everything in envelopes tied up in plastic bags. She did, however, manage her finances well because she could afford to have organizers finish up the paper trail for her, once dementia set in and she had to be moved to a home. She was a delightful lady and taught me how to say “I’m pissed off” in sign language. I thought it was uncanny that I should meet a client who signed just as I was learning sign myself. And I do believe all that about what you put out into the universe coming back to you.
Lots of people loose their hearing in old age, but few know sign. That’s part of the problem with being in the old folks’ home, nobody can undertstand each other. By the end of this job, Jane and I swore we would shoot ourselves before we had to be packed off to a home. This client had no children. She was a career Navy nurse who had achieved the title of Commander. Certainly a competent woman in her prime, but even such a life can end in days spent shredding paper for fear of identity theft.
